Stories of safety, treatment, and the chance to remain children

Each child at Gift of Love has their own story — a journey from vulnerability toward care, learning, and belonging.

Lomen at Gift of Love Centre

Meet Lomen

Lomen, lovingly called Otto, is six years old.

He was born in South Sudan and lost both of his parents when he was still very young. Later, he lived with relatives in a refugee camp in Uganda, where life was difficult and food was often scarce. In time, it was discovered that Lomen was HIV positive. He needed regular treatment and care that could not be provided in the camp.

In 2023, when he was just three years old, he was welcomed into Gift of Love Centre.

Today, the centre is his home. He has friends, caring adults around him, and a safe place where he can learn and grow. He loves drawing, writing in the dirt, and exploring the world around him. He has already completed middle class in kindergarten and is moving forward with joy and confidence.

Lomen got his chance. Many other children are still waiting for theirs.

Bazio Christine, supported through Gift of Love

A family supported

Bazio Christine

Bazio Christine is a mother of six from Adjumani. After her husband left her following the birth of twins, she was left without a stable income and struggled to provide even the basic needs for her family. School materials, food, soap, and medicine were all difficult to afford.

She later joined a pig-rearing support project and received two piglets together with basic equipment and regular follow-up from social workers. Through her hard work, she managed to raise eight piglets. She sold six of them and used the money to pay school fees for her children and cover household expenses.

Today, pig farming has become a reliable source of income for her. Alongside it, she also works in small-scale agriculture to provide greater stability for her family. Her story shows that support can mean not only immediate help, but also a path toward dignity, resilience, and self-reliance.

Grace, 11 years old, smiling outside

Meet Grace

Grace is 11 years old.

She loves dancing and skipping rope, and the volunteers describe her as strong-willed, expressive, and full of life. To continue living safely and growing well, she needs regular treatment and care.

She was born in South Sudan. After her father left the family, Grace and her mother moved to Uganda to live with her grandmother. As time went on, Grace’s health began to worsen. After repeated tests, her mother finally received the diagnosis no one expected: Grace was HIV positive. Later, social workers visited them, and Grace was welcomed into Gift of Love Centre, where she now receives the care she needs.

Today, Grace is bright, sociable, and happiest among other children. She plays, laughs, dances, and jumps rope outside with joy. Her story is a reminder that children living with illness do not need pity alone — they need safety, treatment, consistency, and the chance to remain children.
